Fellowships

Fellowships have a duration of 1-3 years. To be eligible for a fellowship, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Graduate Students
Compensation:

  • stipend of $30,000 per year
  • paid tuition, fees, and health insurance
  • funds for textbooks and scientific journals, computer software and hardware, short courses, internships, travel and related expenses

Postdoctoral Fellows
Compensation:

  • 6 months of matching salary to work with an ISU faculty member

Student Requirements
In addition to your Ph.D. program requirements, the IGERT Fellowship has the following requirements:

  • Laboratory rotations in both "wet" (biological) and "dry" (computational) research environments through laboratory research rotations during your first year;
  • Joint mentoring of your degree work by a biologist and a computer scientist/mathematician/ statistician;
  • Introduction to Computational Molecular Biology, a core course in bioinformatics required of all Fellows;
  • Participation in Faculty Research Seminar and/or Computational Molecular Biology Student Seminars;
  • Annual Fall Computational Molecular Biology Research Retreat;
  • Annual Computational Molecular Biology Symposium—invited speakers will participate in informal "chalk-talk" discussions with Computational Molecular Biology trainees, in addition to presenting formal seminars;
  • Industry internships—option of experiencing computational molecular biology as carried out by our industrial partner, Pioneer Hi-Bred, International;
  • Annual attendance at major national scientific meetings;
  • Computational Biology Laboratory—a common workspace in a newly renovated facility
  • Annual Bioethics Symposium—several bioethics courses will also be offered.
